Spring has sprung here in San Diego and that means more sunshine and outdoor events. I thought I'd highlight a few that feature art or plein air painting, including some upcoming events in which I'll be participating. March 29 -- 30: Garden Native Tour - 2014 - North County
This is not an art event but I will be a featured artist at one of the stops on the tour. The Garden Native Tour is a self-guided driving tour of native plant gardens. This year's tour highlights gardens in North County. Heritage Park in San Marcos is one of the check-in sites, and on Sunday, March 30, I will be demonstrating some plein air painting at the Native Plant Garden there. My easel will be set up on the lovely porch of the historic Cox House, where I will have a display of some of my artwork. The Vista Plein Air Outing is open to all artists who wish to compete in this outdoor painting contest. Info about the Vista Plein Air Outing contest: http://www.altavistagardens.org/html/plein_air.html Info about AVG's Earth Day Celebration: http://www.altavistagardens.org/html/earth_day_2014.html April 12 -- 13: Artfest 2014 at San Diego Botanic Garden - Encinitas This two-day event includes a fine art show, Asian art show, a quick draw contest, and art demonstrations. Of interest to plein air fans like me is the Quick Draw Contest in which participating artists create paintings on-site within a limited time. Artists will be giving demos and selling their work throughout the garden. The Asian Art Show features Ikebana and Bonsai exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations. I will be participating in the Quick Draw Contest (pending confirmation). For more info about Artfest, visit: http://sdbgarden.org/expressions.htm April 26 - 27: Mission Federal Artwalk - Little Italy This free event features artist booths along with other vendors, musicians and performers in downtown San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood. Consider riding the trolley to avoid parking rage. http://www.artwalksandiego.org/missionfederal/festival-info/ Sadly, the Art in the Pines plein air event at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has been canceled due to traffic issues. I am happy that I was able to participate in its fourth, but hopefully not final, year.
